Pregnant?! For fuck's sake! What kind of a sick place was it he'd been posted to? Walking skeletons, a man with the face of an octopus, and now this? Pregnant?! Shit!
He did consider the father for all of three seconds. James Norrington, nervous and apologetic, with his life in danger and his shame broadcast to the world by the little red-haired bastard at his side... At his side, where Andrew should be, but would not, because if the child lived, he surely would die. Even if he survived this - for God's sake! - pregnancy, a man wouldn't live after being cut open deep enough to get the thing out into the world.
But suppose he did survive? What a fantastic career he could have in the freak shows. 'Marvel at the medical monster! Roll up and have a good laugh at the Man Mother and his miracle spawn.' Never, ever again, would a single human being look at him without horror. And James! He was a decent man, he would try to act as though it made no difference, but in his secret heart he would have contempt. There would always be that pause, that delicacy, that stopping the conversation down to take account of his womanly weakness. He would become something less than a Man in the eyes of his lover, and that... that would end it all between them, because Andrew had not the temperament to stand that.
So he stood up, wiped the dust and smoke of the witch's hut from his face and walked to the Catholic pub on the wrong side of Port Royal. A couple of drinks, one or two well placed insults to the Pope and his pederast priests, and after a gratifying working over he was left lying in the gutter outside, clutching his pummeled stomach and coughing up blood. A tearing sensation in his bowels, his head spinning and lights flashing behind his eyes. Thank God for something straightforward and normal. Problem solved.
